Yesterday was hot. I cloistered myself in the office at home all day, wilting with the heat from the computers, until after dinner I gave in. With the promise of ice cream, I got Eric to go for a drive with me down to Beacon Hill Park. The sun was perfectly low and golden and the temperature was finally perfect. I think a peaceful hour by the ocean is just what we needed. Though I will say I am paying today for running through the tall grass – I can’t seem to stop sneezing. I think it was worth it though.
I made a lazy paella for dinner for the first time. (Lazy mostly because I had most of the ingredients, and read most of the instructions.) I only had prawns, but next time I want to try it with chorizo and maybe mussels. Yummm. I took one blurry photo, but it’s not very nice looking, so have a look at some cell phone photos of my garden instead.
Those gloriously huge leaves belong to a spaghetti squash. I know a container isn’t ideal, but it’s larger than it looks; the leaves are just that big. I’ve never grown squash before, so much like everything I do in the garden it’s an experiment. The campanula below didn’t bloom at all last year. This spring it was looking very green so I put it in it’s own large container and it gave me flowers finally! I love the little bell shapes. I wish I could put everything in a proper bed, but until we own our own place things will have to live in containers. I will take what garden I can get!
I wonder if my brain will ever let me sleep in again. Though if I must wake up early, at least it’s the time of year when the sun is up and making the room glow. So far today I’ve managed a sleepy cup of tea, which is probably for the best; when I went to make a pot of coffee I discovered there is a single sad scoop of beans left in the canister. I think the morning is the worst time to realize you’re out of coffee. I will just have to finish getting dressed and head to the store.
Would you look at this shiny new layout. Isn’t it so much cleaner? Ahh. The only issue is with an old gallery system I was using which no longer displays properly, but that’s alright. This is a fresh start, after all!
